Double, triple or 3000 SPG Starpoints (or Avios)

Starwood Hotels (and British Airways Executive Club) have extended a bonus Starpoints (and bonus Avios) promotion that was scheduled to end on 31 December 2014, for the whole of 2015.

SPG Members (join for free here) will therefore continue to collect:

  • double Starpoints for standard rooms,
  • triple Starpoint  for Executive and Superior rooms; and
  • 3,000 bonus Starpoints if you stay in a suite

at Starwood Hotels and Resorts in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Alternatively, if you are a member of British Airways Executive Club, you can elect to earn Avios (instead of SPG Starpoints) at the same earnings rate (you need to book here and choose Miles as your currency when you book your stay).

The key with this offer is to avoid being suckered into a rate just to earn bonus points. It is a specific promo rate, and if the promo rate is more expensive than the cheapest rate otherwise available (and make sure you search for this, too), you need to consider whether it is worth paying the extra to get the points (and – as a ballpark guide – you can do the maths by valuing Avios at 1 Euro cent, and Starpoints at 1.2 Euro cents).

Taking an example of the Sheraton Amsterdam Hotel in March, the cheapest rate is currently €131 without the points offer:

The points offer on this room (in this case, double points), however, costs €190:

There is no way that the double points you will get on this room will come even close to a value of €59 a night, so you shouldn’t go near the points offer on this one. Conversely, if the points offer room was €132, it would be worth the slight extra spend. Clearly, where the points offer is the same or less, you should be all over it – provided you’re happy with the hotel and the price of course, or need to stay there anyway.
