Air Malta reduces its baggage allowance bonuses

Shortly after my posting about the lack of information from Flypass, I received an email from Air Malta entitled “Flypass Information”…

Flypass baggage

Unfortunately, this email has nothing to do with the relaunching of Flypass, but is instead an alert to the fact that Flypass is reducing the bonus baggage allowance for Flypass members as follows:

  • Permanent tier members additional allowance is down from 10kg to 5kg
  • Diamond tier members additional allowance is down from 20kg to 10kg.

The reduced allowance is effective from 1 November 2013.

While this is not devastating news (the above figures are of course in addition to the 20kg for economy and 30kg allowance for Business class flights), it is disappointing. The original allowances were not particularly impressive when compared to other airlines, and are now obviously far less so.

Given competitor BA’s recent return to Malta (not least with its now much more generous baggage allowances for frequent travellers), and the lack of any real information as to the development of the Flypass relaunch, this change does seem to be particularly badly timed by Air Malta. It is also very disappointing that the people who are suffering here are Air Malta’s most loyal customers.
