While the Air Malta sale offering 25% off flights to/from the UK and France has now ended, a new, more expansive, sale has replaced it.

We recently wrote a fairly scathing piece on Air Malta’s decision to remove hot meals and a choice of drinks from Economy Class, and instead serve a baguette and 500ml of water.
Interestingly, Air Malta cabin crew have now been instructed by the Malta Union of Cabin Crew (UCC) to take limited industrial action as a result. The reason? The new “baguette and water” meal is also to be served to crew. According to the UCC, the collective agreement between the cabin crew and Air Malta states that crew have to be provided with “suitable meals”. Baguette and water is, apparently, not a “suitable meal”.
As a result, passengers on all Air Malta flights will now receive an even more limited service. Cabin crew will provide the free baguette and water, but the “wide selection of good quality food items, including hot”, that is supposed to be made available for purchase from cabin crew, will not be offered. Air Malta has announced that hot meals and all drinks for Economy Class passengers (apart from 500ml of water) will require payment from 1 January 2015.
As such, Economy Class passengers on all flights will receive a complimentary baguette and 500ml of water (read: bread and water). Conversely, Club Class (Air Malta Business Class) passengers will benefit from an upgraded in-flight menu.
Air Malta has also stated that “a wide selection of good quality food items, including hot, will be available for purchase from cabin staff”. In order to reach this purported “good quality” threshold for their hot items, they will need to substantially up their game.
Apparently, the revised menu will save the airline some €4 million each year. (more…)
Air Malta’s Flypass frequent flyer programme may not be the most popular or generous one out there. However, use it properly and there is value to be found: never more so than by upgrading your flight from London Heathrow.
For 10,000 KMiles (Flypass miles), you can switch your Heathrow-Malta flight from economy to business class. “But why would I use 10,000 miles to simply get the same seat further forward, and moderately improved in-flight food?” I hear you ask.
The answer is very simple: the Etihad lounge. (more…)
