Turkish Airlines set to buy Air Malta

The Times of Malta has spent the last few days speculating heavily on the likelihood of a “strategic alliance” between Air Malta and Turkish Airlines. Given that the two airlines already codeshare, the most likely end result of these talks is Turkish Airlines taking a stake in air Malta.

Quite how much of a stake this is, remains to be seen. The Times of Malta reported that an Air Malta “company source” told them that “the government is currently leaving all its options open and is not excluding anything. Discussions range from a strategic partnership to full takeover of Air Malta.”

In an interesting further development, Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat then confirmed yesterday that Air Malta is considering a strategic partnership with another airline, although he would not elaborate on the nature of the partnership, nor the airline. However, you can rest fairly assured it is Turkish Airlines.

Turkish Airlines UK Economy Class sale – Istanbul return at £110 all-in

Turkish Airlines is running an aggressive Economy Class sale from London this April. Various fares are heavily discounted, including Dubai at under £300 all-in return.

However, the standout fare for us is London Gatwick to Istanbul Ataturk, at a truly excellent £110 all-in return. We are big fans of both Turkish Airlines (which has a more than bearable Economy Class) and Istanbul, so frankly find this fare borders on the irresistible.

It does of course also include 20kg of checked baggage. (more…)

Review: Turkish Airlines lounge – Istanbul airport

I am generally of the view that when it comes to airline lounges, bigger is not always better. So, when I saw a Turkish Airlines’ advert claiming that their Istanbul (Ataturk) lounge is “bigger than some airports” (and at nearly 5000 sq metres, it is), I decided to reserve judgment.

Space does of course give you plenty of opportunity to include all sorts of options and extras, but it also has the danger of making the lounge entirely soulless. For evidence of that, you need look no further than the Emirates lounge in Dubai, which feels substantially more like a school canteen than a premium traveller lounge.

However, Turkish Airlines have done a truly fantastic job on the Istanbul lounge: balancing the wealth of space with a genuinely premium feel that pervades the entire area. (more…)

Vueling four day sale – various flights at €29.99

I’ve always struggled slightly to warm to Vueling, but I think this is mainly because until recently I had no idea how to pronounce it.

vueling sale

After years of inisting on calling it “View-ling”, I was told in no uncertain terms by our childrens’ Spanish babysitter that it’s in fact “Bwelling”.

I digress.

There are currently two interesting pan-European flight sales on offer, one of them from Vueling, that I thought worth flagging:

Vueling is currently having a four day sale, with numerous flights on its pan-European network as low as €29 each way.  (more…)

Malta to Istanbul – €109 all-in returns with Turkish Airlines

Istanbul is an absolutely fantastic city. Vibrant, cultured and unfailingly welcoming, it offers a huge amount to any tourist.

With that in mind, one of our 2013 highlights was the temporary availability of a €99 all-in return between Malta and Istanbul, offered by both Turkish Airlines and Air Malta. That is a top, top value fare.

The good news is, the offer is (pretty much) back. It has crept up to €109, but still offers very good value for money. (more…)

Air Malta Istanbul return flights – half price at 15,000 KMiles

MaltaPoints may be a Malta-facing website, but we are huge fans of Istanbul. Great food, culture and shopping, and some of the friendliest people in Europe (and Asia…) all combine to make for a fantastic destination.
